When Your Text Books Do More than Put You To Sleep

Campus Book Rentals has been around for 6 years. In that 6 years alone it has saved students over 113 MILLION dollars. I’m still not over the fact that this service wasn’t around when I was in college. I spent nearly $1,000 on books my first semester of law school, and several hundred dollars every semester of undergrad – and that was on USED books!

But what I’m here to talk to you about today isn’t the quickest way to fall asleep in your apartment or dorm room (Geology 100 anyone?), it’s Operation Smile.

I’ve worked with CBR for years now and one thing they’re consistent about is their dedication to Operation Smile. Every single book rental results in a donation to Operation Smile.

“Operation Smile is an international children’s medical charity that performs safe, effective cleft lip and cleft palate surgery, and delivers postoperative and ongoing medical therapies to children in low and middle income countries.”

You may, like me, not understand what the big deal is about cleft palates. It’s not just a superficial procedure akin to plastic surgery. Every day living skills that we may take for granted like eating, breathing easily and speaking are made difficult with a cleft palate and a child with cleft palate has twice the risk of dying before their first birthday.

If you’re looking to donate to the cause but are well past text book age, you can also donate directly to support the charity, train doctors and build awareness. You can also find out ways to get involved here.
